The Quiet Achiever

Desmond attended Brompton Village School until he passed his 11+ exam a year early. This took him to Northallerton Grammar School where he excelled and became Head Boy in 1943/4. Here he won the nickname "Dizzy" - which stayed with him throughout his life.

He was always physically fit, and very keen on cricket and swimming. One day he returned home from school with his clothes entirely wet through. He gave no explanation and so was told off by his mother for arriving home in such a state. Only later did she find out that the modest Desmond had dived into water to rescue someone from drowning.

He was a very popular boy, but he was not a great socialite. When asked once why he did not go to visit his school friends he replied that they knew where he lived if they wanted him.
